I'm Back

This is a little short note to let you know that I am back. A lot has happen but I won't bore you with all of my life's challenges. I do want to share that I am looking for ideas to start a newsletter or blogs. Writing is always good but there is only a small group -I think I may be wrong. There are a lot of writers busy writing themselves. Why am I starting a new site? It is for a new venture in internet business - something I can do from my home in pajamas.

Look for me by the end of next week.

New web site

I know - it has been a while again. But this time it wasn't a year. Here is the latest. I have been very busy as most of you.

I took up Golf of all things. I will posting an article on my experiences learning to hit this elusive little white ball.

Just a reminder for those who are writers - check out www.floridawriters.net for the latest information of the FWA 2008 Writers Conference. It is a great opportunity to network with agents, publishers, editors, and other writers. If you decide to go contact me at FWABookstoreAdvi@aol.com about volunteering as a room monitor.

I have started a new Internet business call http://deal-hunt.com. Check it out especially if you want to order a book from Amazon, or go on a trip and need a Hotel, and last but not least go buy something on EBay. Let me know what you think of the site, although I did not set it up it was done by Home Business Network. Pass the word around, I need all the help I can get.

God bless you and thank you for visiting my blog

How Does My Garden Grow?

I know I have been gone awhile. I can give you loads of excuses but mostly I became involve with other projects. So here I am again. I hope you enjoy my writings and love to hear from you. I still intend to do www.elizstravels.blogspot.com just as soon as soon as I get the AdSense working properly.
May God Bless you with a great day.

How Does My Garden Grow?

I love Mexican Petunia. There is something renewing about this flower. My challenge is to get them to grow in my flower beds. Let me start at the beginning.

When I lived on Parkgate Dr., at Good Samaritan Village in Kissimmee, FL, my friend gave me some cuttings of this flower and told me to just stick them into the grown and they will grow. I didn’t know then what kind of flowers they were. So I followed her instruction and planted them in my front flower bed. Soon they were growing tall and flowers were blooming every day. In late spring of 2004 I had someone pressure wash my mobile home. (It needed it badly). She used a very strong cleaner. She told me to cover the plants and then wash them down after she was done and that they would be okay. I followed her directions but I still lost a lot of flowers and bushes.

In the beginning of August I redid my flower bed got it to look great and the Mexican Petunia were blooming again. Then Hurricane Charlie came. We lost our home. The flowers survive so I put them into a large pot and brought them over to our new place on Middlegate Dr. (Good Samaritan Village). I didn’t plant them right away. We were having work completed on our new place and they were doing fine in the large flower pots. I didn’t work on my new flower beds right away because they were a mess and I was still getting my new place in order. In 2006 I went to California for six weeks. My daughter came to water my plants while I was away but she didn’t realize that she was to water the large plants outside the screen room. They all died!

Trying again, In 2007 I won at work (an ecology event) a dwarf version of Mexican Petunias. I had finally gotten around to weeding, pruning, and planting. To my horror the rabbits love to eat the dwarf Mexican Petunias. I tried putting shinning things around them. I even put moth balls around them. They still come back. I didn’t want to hurt the rabbits so they eat them – letting them win the battle.

Here we are in 2008. Crista, the gardener, gave me some Mexican Petunia plants (they call them Texas Blue Bells). She had pulled them out of another area. I planted them in the front flowerbed. They died! It was a hassle to water them. So I paid Jake, my lawn man, to set up a soaker watering system in the front and I connected a soaker hose for the new flower beds I made up in the back of my home. I purchased two Mexican Petunia plants and planted some in the front and some in the back. They are starting to take. The plants that Crista gave me are also coming back. A Caledonia plant I planted two years ago is also coming back. Amazing what a little water will do. I vision within a year that the front and back will be filled with beautiful Mexican Petunia. That is if the rabbits don’t eat them.

Now why do I love these plants so much? Every morning they have new flowers. Every morning is a new start. Yesterday’s flowers die away but nothing stops them from producing beautiful blue blossoms every morning. It is the same with life, each evening ends the day and the next morning starts a new day. Isn’t God amazing?

Synopsis of our Excursion

I’m back – My dad and I took a trip up the east coast, which is why I haven’t written anything in a month. Here is a short synopsis of our excursion. Look for more details, both humorous and I hope interesting on my new blog www.eliz’stravels.blogspot.com. I hope to have it set-up by the end of next week.
We started out by Auto Train on Amtrak, spent two days in Washington DC. Our next destination was Ronkonkoma, Long Island where we spent two days with family. From there we went by Ferry across the Long Island Sound into Connecticut drove past Providence and stayed outside Boston, Massachusetts for three nights. Our next jaunt was Owl’s Head, Maine; we enjoyed seeing our friends and seeing their little community. Then we traveled back to New Hampshire to have a wonderful lunch with another writing friend. We also saw the Cathedral in the Pines, set in Rindge, New Hampshire.
Passing through Vermont the next place we stopped at was Howe’s Caverns then we moved on the one of my main places to visit, Niagara Falls. We stayed in the Sheridan Hotel on the ninth floor and had a wonderful view of the falls. Moving on we stayed with friends just inside the border of Pennsylvania, from there we went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to see the Amish Country and the Sights and Sounds Theater, which had a marvelous, and inspiration musical “In The Beginning.”
Our next stop was to visit more family in Chesapeake, VA. Keeping with the trend we visited my Granddaughter in Cairo, GA (no not Egypt). Tuesday morning we decided not to go home so we went to one more city, Atlanta, GA. We stopped by the Zoo and the new Coca Cola museum.
Yes we did a lot and yes it was very tiring, but it was a wonderful experience. If I were to do it over I would have made some changes but that is for another article.

What! I Can’t Wear Jeans!

A few weeks ago while at our weekly writers’ club meeting we were politely informed if we wanted to continue to use the conference room in the office complex we needed to change our dress code. The executives felt it was inappropriate to use their conference room in jeans or shorts. It was a hot day in Florida and I, myself, was wearing faded denim shorts and a summer blouse.

Not sure why but this infuriated me. Here I was 67 years old and some young executive trying to impress his executive was telling me how to dress for a meeting that gets together after hours. We meet five-thirty to seven-thirty in the evening to be precise.

This brought back memories of the ‘50s. It was the Poodle Shirts and Saddle Shoes time in my life. Girls always had to wear dresses or skirts even if it was below 30 degrees outside. We rebelled. Well we tried. We wore big bows in our hair and carried a doll to show that we were being treated as babies. On many days we wore black blouses and black skirts in mourning. It was the Elvis Presley time and American Bandstand time of my life. Although it didn’t work then, over time women were okay to wear pants and soon the trend went on to jeans.

Another wonderful memory for me is when I was in my forties. I was wearing slacks by this time but had never own a pair of jeans. My good friends invited me to my first concert. Linda Ronstadt was the county singer, and somewhat popular at the time. I decided to buy my first pair of jeans. Lee Jeans was the brand. I was hooked. The concert was great and so were the Lee Jeans. Soon the only time I wore slacks was to work or church. All other times it was and still is jeans. The only time I am out of jeans is during the summer months and even then my shorts are usually made of denim.

Here I was a week later from the announcement and trying to decide what to wear. I ended up with pinkest coral khakis and a t-shirt that says, “I’m Retired and This is as Dressed Up as I Get.” Still a little rebellious but no one complained and I hope the executives got a laugh out of it.

My blog is not directed to any group or cause

One of my friends is ______, you fill in the blanks. Well she’s _________, he’s _______, again fill in the blanks. How often have we’ve heard these phrases trying to pretend that we are not prejudice? How often do we make excuses for our actions?

Recently a comment was made to me that if I use Rainbow as the keyword in my blog that I would receive inquiries from the Gay community. I was hurt, offended that the use of such a beautiful name and gift created by God would only bring on one community and not the populations in general. My first reaction was “who cares.” Then I found myself expanding the keyword to be more descriptive; actually someone suggested it. Why?

When I look at people, I look at who they are. I don’t want to take their beliefs or culture away from them. I really enjoy learning from them. If I see a young Muslim women working at Wal-mart, I’m impress and curious at the same time. Like a little kid I want to ask questions and wonder what their home life is like. The same goes with Hispanic, African Americans, Germans, and Italians and yes; even Gays. If you are a truck driver or a banker, an actress or waitress, you are all the same.
God’s creation.

So I am asking that you look at my blog as what it is, a look at life. My blog is not directed to any group or cause but I reserve the right to share my beliefs and values.

No matter who we are, we all have families, struggles and desires. It is my desire that someday when I am still alive we will all respect each other. Okay so this could be another blog on another day.
